YouTube Shorts thumbnails

Shorts thumbnails confuse people because the image you choose does not appear where you expect. Understanding which surfaces show it, and which do not, decides whether it is worth spending time on at all.

The size

Shorts are vertical. YouTube's documentation gives a recommended resolution of 2160 x 3840 pixels in a 9:16 aspect ratio, with a minimum height of 640 pixels.

That is the same aspect ratio as TikTok and Instagram Reels, which is convenient: one vertical canvas serves all three, and the editor exports that shape directly.

A 16:9 thumbnail cannot be reused here. Fitting a wide image into a vertical slot leaves either bars or a centre crop that removes most of the design.

Where the cover actually shows

This is the part that changes the decision. When someone is swiping the Shorts feed, they do not see a cover at all — the video simply starts. The cover appears on the surfaces around the feed: your channel's Shorts tab, search results, the subscriptions feed, and when the Short is shared as a link.

So the cover is not what earns the swipe. It is what earns the click from someone who is deliberately browsing your channel or a set of search results.

That makes it worth real effort for Shorts you expect people to find by searching or by looking through your channel, and much less important for Shorts that live or die in the feed.

Design for a grid, not a feed

On your channel's Shorts tab the covers appear as a tight grid of small vertical rectangles. That is the context to design for: several of your own covers side by side.

Two consequences. First, they need to look like a set — same typeface, same colour discipline — or the grid looks like a jumble. Second, each one still needs one distinguishing element, or your own videos become indistinguishable from one another.

Keep the text high in the frame. The lower portion of a Shorts cover is where titles and metadata get drawn on several surfaces.

A frame from the video is often the wrong choice

YouTube lets you pick a frame from the Short itself. It is fast and it is usually mediocre, because a frame captured mid-motion has motion blur, a half-formed expression and no text.

A designed cover with a clear subject and two or three words beats a captured frame in a grid nearly every time. The exception is when the video's single most striking moment is genuinely more compelling than anything you would design, which happens, but less often than people assume.

Quick answers

What size is a Shorts thumbnail?

2160 x 3840 pixels, 9:16, with a minimum height of 640 pixels according to YouTube's documentation.

Does the Shorts cover show in the Shorts feed?

No. In the swipe feed the video starts immediately. The cover appears on the channel's Shorts tab, in search, in the subscriptions feed and on shared links.

Can I use the same image for a Short and a normal video?

Not without rebuilding it. They are different aspect ratios, and cropping one into the other removes a large part of the design.
